The Hungry Caterpillar
In our garden one morning there was a little egg lying on a leaf. The sun warmed the egg and a tiny caterpillar hatched out.
It searched for food. On Monday, it ate its way through an apple - but it was still hungry. On Tuesday, it ate two pears - but it was still hungry. On Wednesday, she ate her way through three plums - but she was still hungry.
On Thursday she ate her way through four strawberries, on Friday through five oranges, on Saturday through more apples.
For the next week, too, she did nothing but eat, eat, eat. But one day she stopped eating.
Now she was a big, fat, ugly caterpillar. She built a house around herself. She stayed in it for more than two weeks. Then it freed itself and a beautiful butterfly hatched out.
